Object Number: 39
Description
Object 39, better known as the Metro, is a large subway train that has been seen passing through multiple different levels of the Backrooms. The Metro takes the appearance of a typical subway train, being shaped somewhat rectangularly, having multiple locomotives with plenty of seats, and a conductor’s compartment. Currently, not much information is known about it, and most of the information in this document comes from interviews with eyewitnesses and a few tests conducted by The M.E.G.
A theory has arisen that the Metro is actually multiple different trains that drive around, due to the descriptions of it varying among wanderers. The first discovery of it took place on Level 7 during an unrelated research mission. Operatives present on the scene described a blue and grey train riding across the waters as if they were tracks. Once the train reached the operatives, it appeared to slow down and open its doors, seemingly inviting them to go in. They waited for a few minutes to see if anything else would happen, documenting the train as much as possible, before it closed its doors once more and drove away.

The Metro reappeared soon after on Level 3, this time in front of The B.N.T.G.’s “Storage Facility”. The members on guard duty that day described a yellow train suddenly clipping through the wall and pulling in front of the base. Part of the train actually remained clipped in the wall due to the small size of Level 3, which caused further shock among the guards. After the doors opened, one of the more brave guards named Sam Willis decided to step in out of pure curiosity.
In later interviews, Sam describes the door shutting behind him. The train then proceeded to start moving, causing Sam to fall back into one of the seats. Sam was able to snap a picture of the train moving from inside. A strange thing to note is that one of the windows, as seen in the picture, appears to have been broken at one point before being replaced.
Sam then describes the train moving at immense speeds through the level, clipping through multiple walls upon immediate impact. After this occurred a few times, the train then appeared to suddenly clip into Level 188, an exit of Level 3 that has not been documented prior to this point.
Sam was later recovered on Level 11 exclaiming about a mysterious “Metro” that brought him throughout multiple different levels. The M.E.G. took him into Base Beta for interviews and rehab where they were able to connect this event to the Level 7 sighting.
Properties
Despite having a conductor’s area, The Metro appears to be self-driven. The Metro is usually completely empty, having no other noteworthy humans, entities, or objects of value inside of it. Magazines and newspapers written in an unknown language can occasionally be found, but nothing else noteworthy is inside.
As previously mentioned, The Metro appears to be able to travel through any level at will. How exactly the object is able to do this is unknown, but the train’s ability to pass through levels with ease is what caught the interest of the M.E.G. Passengers of The Metro report the train moving at unnaturally high speeds — ones that would normally obliterate the walls it touches. Despite this, the Metro has never been documented to cause damage, casualties, or even proof of its arrival with things like skid marks. The M.E.G. was able to document the speed of the Metro in one of tests: an estimated 87 mph average. However, other wanderers have reported the Metro having a speed so fast that they were unable to stand up from their seat during its movement.
Another strange thing about the train is its ability to travel between levels at random. The train has been seen suddenly passing throughout walls into levels that aren’t documented to be exit points. The first documented example of this was The Metro’s travel from Level 3 to 188, which is currently considered to be impossible through regular human clipping.
Uses
Currently, there is no known way to “summon” the Metro, or control where it stops. In all documented sightings, it appears through a wall unannounced and at complete random. It is still being discussed whether or not the Metro has a preference for specific levels or if it travels through all of them without bias. The Metro is not considered dangerous at this current time, but caution should still be taken when boarding it. Any dangerous effects, entities, objects, or any other undocumented occurrences on the Metro should be reported to The M.E.G. as soon as possible.

Epic! Ok, so I was traveling around Level 5, when the Metro suddenly phased through the wall and stopped right in front of me. Also, I do find it weird that The Metro has always been documented stopping right in front of people. Doesn’t that seem strange if it’s a non-sentient object? Anyways, I had been walking for a few days, so I decided to hop in and rest for a bit and see where the train took me.
Something really weird happened as the train started to move. My friend called me and wanted to know if I wanted to meet up on Level 6.1, so I agreed. I’m not sure if this was pure coincidence, or maybe The Metro itself hearing my conversation, but after a minute or two of phasing through the hotel’s walls, the train appeared in Level 6.1. The thing that really stuck out to me was how the train literally pulled up right in front of my friend. It wasn’t, like, across the room, it was directly in front of him. It also freaked out the restaurant guests when a giant green train just phased through the wall and all of the tables out of nowhere.
It seems like too much of a coincidence to me that this thing is just a weird train that can pass through walls. I think it may be alive. I’d recommend discussing with your colleagues about possibly reclassifying this thing as an entity. Hope this was helpful.

Jonathan, thank you so much for bringing this breakthrough to light. This is incredibly valuable to our highly prioritized research on this new Metro. I will bring this up with some of the other archivists, and will talk about a revision of the document and possible reclassification of the object into an entity. Words cannot express how much this means to us.

Entity Number: 756
Habitat(s): All levels

Description
Entity 756, formerly Object 39, is a large metro car that is found throughout various levels of the Backrooms. Widely known as The Metro, the train is seen traveling through various levels at random, and can be used as an easy exit from the original level.
The Metro takes the appearance of a modern Metro car that can pass through solid matter at will. The Metro appears to use this ability as its method inter-level travel. Exactly how it achieves this feat is currently unknown, but it has been theorized that it has some sort of ability that allows it to clip with more ease than other creatures, similar to the Black Knights and Jerry.
The train can also ride through areas without the need for tracks. Not only has it been documented gliding across maze-like areas such as Level 3, but it has also been documented riding across the impossible surfaces, such as being able to ride across the top of Level 7’s ocean without sinking. It was even documented to float over the void of Level 149 as if it were riding on invisible tracks.
Perhaps the biggest advantage to this ability is its elusive nature. In all documented sightings, the Metro has been seen entering at random, and shortly leaving without a trace right after. The Metro has never been documented to cause any damage to any walls, objects, or people. Not even a single spec of dust is left behind during its stops.
Behaviors
Plenty of debate has occurred over whether The Metro should be considered an object or an entity, which is still ongoing. The Metro was originally presumed to be a self-driven car that could speed through levels at random. Further research put these assumptions into question. The Metro has a strange property in which it is always seen opening directly in front of humans who are either alone or in a small group. The Metro’s stops seem to be specifically deliberate, and it has never been documented to arrive in the middle of a large crowd in a place like Level 11. The Metro has also been shown to stop in certain locations that apply to the passenger it is carrying.
The first documented example of this was the case of wanderer Jonathan Swartz. Jonathan describes being a passenger on the Metro who happened to get a call from his friend. During the ride, Jon was on the phone with a friend making plans to meet up in Level 6.1. Strangely, the Metro very quickly changed route and appeared in Level 6.1 mere minutes after the call ended. An even more noteworthy detail was the car pulling up right in front of the friend Jon planned to meet up with. This occurrence was the initial proof that raised the debate of the Metro possibly being an entity.
Further tests were conducted after this discovery to learn more the Metro’s possible sentience. Two agents who found the Metro were instructed to discuss a desire to travel to Level 149 amongst themselves, a level with only one known entrance at the time of writing. Just like in Jon’s story, The Metro suddenly changed routes and flew into Level 149 within a few minutes. The car floated across the void as if it were on invisible tracks before letting the pair off onto one of the islands.
Another test was conducted where the passengers were instructed to remain silent the entire ride, and constantly think about traveling to Level 563. To their surprise, The Metro stopped in Level 563, letting them off onto the dirt road.
The final test before a consensus was reached was testing the capabilities of the Metro itself. The operatives were instructed to discuss a desire to travel to the mysterious enigmatic level known as Nothing At All. The log of the test has been attached below.
LOG M-098
Time: 5/10/2018
Operatives involved: Amber Hart and Ella Orchidson, overseen by mission operator Jack White
Goal: Travel to the level “Nothing At All” via Entity 756.
<BEGIN LOG>
Amber: Okay, me and Ella just boarded. Can you guys hear us back at home?
Jack: All clear, Amber. Go ahead and proceed with the mission.
Amber: Alright. Hey Ella, did you hear about the “Nothing At All” level that was recently hypothesized?
Ella: Yeah, I did. It’s pretty sad what happened to the guy who actually managed to possibly go there. I wish we could just get there already and see what it’s all about.
[The Metro can be heard screeching and suddenly changing direction]
Jack: Did it work?
Amber: It looks like it. It just changed direction. Wait… what’s happening?
Jack: What?
Amber: The windows are starting to turn blue.
Ella: What’s that outside?
Amber: Whatever it is, it’s beautiful…
Jack: Amber? What’s happening?
Unknown voice: Welcome to your destination.
Jack: AMBER?!
[Transmission lost]
Result: This test was considered a failure, and no new information was received after the transmission was cut. Ella and Amber have been declared KIA, and attempting to travel to undiscovered levels is not recommended at this current time.
Biology
Exact biology of the Metro has been difficult to study due to its incoherent path of travel. The Metro appears to be made up of four locomotives: the conductor’s compartment, and the three passenger cars. The passenger cars appear normal, save for the strange, broken window that was previously mentioned. Other than this, the Metro appears unable to sustain any new damage. One test was conducted where operatives were instructed to attempt to damage the internal walls of the metro using a hammer, but they were unable to cause even a dent. The conductor’s compartment has not been explored due to it always being locked. The Metro’s high-speed travel also makes it difficult to navigate the train once it begins moving.
The Metro is presumed to be about 120 feet (37 meters) long, but this is just a rough estimate based on the limited knowledge of the entity. How exactly the Metro is powered is also a mystery, given that there is nobody to perform maintenance on the cars. Despite this, all reported sightings of the Metro have described the car as being incredibly well-maintained and clean.
Do’s and Don’ts
Do
- Board the Metro if you come across it.
- Attempt to travel to a safe level.
- Relay any information about the entity to The M.E.G. as soon as possible.
Don’t
- Attempt to travel to an unsafe or undiscovered level.

“The Metro” is the name given to a long subway station with sentient metro cars that can travel to any level at will.
A picture of the repaired window from inside The Metro on Level 3.
A photo of the interior of one of the Metro’s locomotives.
A picture of the level itself, along with one of the Metro cars.
Description
The Metro, as a level, resembles a typical underground subway station one would find in a populous city. The Metro’s floor is made of grey bricks with two tracks on the sides of the path. Stairs occasionally appear throughout the area, but are always barricaded or walled off. The paths are well lit by long, thin fluorescent lights, along with various lit-up signs in an unknown language.
“The Metro”, as it’s known currently, was originally considered to be an object with strange properties, discovered on Level 7. At that time, what was known was that a strange train existed which could pass through solid matter and travel between levels by unknown means. After further studies were conducted, it was discovered that you could control where The Metro travelled to by expressing interest in traveling to a certain location while inside. This brought up the debate of it possibly being an entity, which it was later reclassified into. After even further studies, a “train station” of sorts was discovered that seems to be “home base” for The Metro, so to speak. It was reclassified again into its current form, which is a level with a group of sentient train cars collectively known as “The Metro”.
The discovery of the level mostly confirmed the theory of multiple cars existing, each resembling each other heavily with tweaked details. For example, the cars can have different colored stripes, lights, seats, stickers, etc. Other things such as graffiti, flags from real-life countries, ads in various languages — some unknown — and dialects, and other things of the sort have been documented. It’s currently unknown exactly how many cars exist, as two working cars have never been seen at the same time, but at least 5 different kinds have been documented.
On each side of the station’s path is a set of tracks where the cars travel. The left side is typically empty, save for when the working cars make a stop there before continuing their trips. The right side is taken up by a dormant train car which seems to stretch endlessly down the entire level. A large amount of the locomotives have been turned into bases for humans, some of which are used as trading outposts or motels, while others are dangerous and hostile towards unwelcome guests.
The Metro, while acting as a bridge of sorts between levels, additionally acts as a safe haven for wanderers, some even considering the level as their permanent living space. Due to the lack of any hostile entities or environmental conditions, The Metro is considered habitable. The Metro is considered a great place to trade with or interact with other wanderers, similar to that of places such as Level 6.1.
How long the subway station is exactly is unknown, however it is presumed that is ranges at least 100 miles long. As previously mentioned, the main portion of the level — the area where the metro cars stop — is the main hub of activity among wanderers. It is considered the second best place for trading, mingling among wanderers, and residence, surpassed only by 6.1. No dangers exist here or anywhere else in the level. Even if one is to fall on the tracks, the wanderer will not be harmed due to its previously mentioned ability to phase through matter.
Entities
This level is totally devoid of hostile entities, and houses only some peaceful Facelings alongside the humans which travelled to The Metro from Level 11. Other than the Facelings, the only entity here is the Metro Car. The Metro comes down the left track every few hours and waits for approximately 10 minutes before continuing its travels.
The Metro has only ever displayed a neutral sentience, not being hostile towards wanderers nor directly helpful, other than taking destination requests from its passengers. It is unknown if provoking the Metro to hostility is possible due to the lack of documentation. Passengers of The Metro have described the car moving so fast that it’s near impossible to exit your seat and study the details. The Metro’s speeds have been documented to range anywhere between 60 mph all the way to Mach 3. Despite this, wanderers have never reported symptoms of whiplash, dislocated bones or muscles, or any injuries for that matter despite the unnatural speed of the cars.
Entrances and Exits
The only way to enter this level is by boarding The Metro car upon its unannounced arrival. This is very difficult to do due to the unpredictable nature of the Metro when it isn’t being controlled via travel requests. Exiting is only possible by boarding the train during its stop.
But everyone knows that when the lights go out, the darkness pours in.
