One of Level 46's ruins.

Level 46 is the 47th Level of the Backrooms

Level 46 has the appearance of an Arabian Desert being dry, hot at day and cold at night.

Level 46 can be found in three states:

  • Day: When the sun is in the sky, temperatures reach 70 degrees Celsius, being fatal to human life.The only way to counteract this is to take refuge in the ruins that can be found in the place, which seem to have special properties.
  • Night: The night is just as deadly, with temperatures dropping to -30 degrees Celsius, which will lead to hypothermia from not being well equipped. Just like in the day, the ruins can be used as safe points, because they have heat preservation properties.
  • Dawn: Dawn is the best time to explore Level 46. During this state the temperature varies between 30 and 40 degrees Celsius and the lighting, although dim, is enough for an exploration in conditions.

Contrary to what may be thought, Level 46 does not follow a 24-hour pattern, instead, there is a cycle between the three states in which they change in a period of time that seems to be random.

Below is a table with the registered states:

State Time
Day 6+ months
Night 1 year
Day 3 months
Dawn 3 years
Night Current

Regardless of the state in which Level 46 is, Sandstorms, which cover the entire landscape, may appear. The Sandstorms are as dangerous, as sandstorms in The Frontrooms. Additionally, highly hostile entities, The Sand Spirits, are active during Sandstorms.

Sand Spirits are highly hostile, attacking on sight, with their only weakness being any kinds of liquids; If you do not have a water-supply at hand, taking cover is highly advised. Residing near an Oasis is highly recommended, during a Sandstorm.

Oasis' are rare to find. Oasis' are unaffected by the three states and are the second best place to find a natural supply of Almond Water, after Base "Desert Rose".

The Ancient Ones:

The Ancient Ones is a term to refer to the now presumably extinct civilization, which once populated Level 46, presumed to be the origin of the various anomalous ruins, residing within Level 46. The reason for their extinction is unknown, but it is theorized that, what is known as, "The Cataclysm" is the reason for The Ancient Ones' extinction and the destruction of their buildings.

It is also theorized that The Ancient Ones' may be affiliated with The Lost, since the two languages possess similarities; Members of The Lost may have been civilians of The Ancient Ones, however, this is unconfirmed.

What is certain is that The Ancient Ones had a scientific level advanced enough to create astral charts and a prediction of the solar cycle, which is much more accurate and extensive, than the ones created by the M.E.G.. This information was recovered from the "Temple Scrolls", which were found in one of the largest ruins and currently used as a base of operations by The M.E.G..

Although The Ancient Ones' language have not yet been deciphered, the illustrations shown in the manuscripts suggest the existence of "A Higher Day", in which the temperatures would be sufficient to melt the rock; No events of that nature have ever been recorded, by M.E.G. operatives.

Bases, Outposts and Communities

M.E.G. Base "Desert Rose":

  • Can be seen in the distance from any of Level 46's entrances;
  • Was created to explore Level 46 and discover the secrets behind The Ancient Ones;
  • Provides water and shelter to Wanderers;
  • It has a population of around 20 people.

Entrances And Exits:

Level 46 can be accessed by walking 10 miles toward the desert in Level 80; Alternatively, you can also enter by finding a door, composed out of sandstone, in Level 0, Level 1 and/or Level 21.

The easiest way to exit Level 46 is by jumping into an Oasis, which will take you to Level 293, leaving you on its beach, completely dry.

It is also possible that a ruin with an office door will take you to Level 4.

Certain parts of Level 46, that have a noticeably lower gravity, gradually progress into the largest floating sand isle of Level 149.
