Good level. It felt like a good break from the constant madness, but without feeling off to the vive of the Backrooms as a whole.
The sense of liminality is still there. A personal favourite of mine are the noises of wildlife and such, despite not being any living forms throughout the level whatsoever. In fact one of those seems to be "hostile" which made it even more interesting. Also, Almond Water river, W.
Interesting entities too, especially the red one that seems to attempt to replicate and esparce through what it touches. The blue one is also the definition of being full in drugs bruh.
Overall, it's a nice, simple page, that achieves both being liminal while not falling into dull territory. +1 from me.
Reading this level was great! It's a nice change from the usual levels too. I loved reading about the unique flora and fungi within this level. The theme/Layout of it too makes me just feel a nice feeling within. I don't really have much to say. I just really like the feel of this level.
tis' ya boy.. liquid mcgee. Don't ask how I got here.
noah rabe,
Different directions. In style. In content. Once we escape Level 0, the fun begins.
Your reward is a satisfied reader and +1. My reward is the experience.
THANK YOU.
"The sounds of fish"
Ah yes indeed the fish which make extremely loud fish noises in bodies of natural water that we all recognize which are totally audible especially over the rush of the river yes /j
"a height of 0.7 feet in height"
"The entities damaged organs"
Anyway +1
150,000 square feet is… really small. A circle with that much space would only have a radius of 437 feet. There would literally be no room to explore because you could walk from end to end in 2 minutes. Just as reference, Disney World is over 1 billion square feet.
I also find it silly how a MEG explorer ends up traumatized in this place, considering that you would have to pass through much more dangerous levels to get here.
Last point is that the way the Mykitan Fungi kills people makes no sense. People do not die from malnourishment in mere seconds. If you want to make it more sensible and grueling, you could have the spore develop into new mushrooms over a period of a few hours inside the human body and eat away at the flesh.
I would like to call out a few things here, my intentions are not to sound rude so I apologize if it comes off that way.
1: The 150,000 square feet was a metric based on real-life large greenhouses. It's not supposed to fit a whole world inside of it although I could see how it comes off that way. Additionally, I would like to point out this is a rough estimate since we don't technically know the size of the fungi section (unlike the other sections). Although, if it's a big problem I'll change it to the largest greenhouse in the world's measurement of 215,278 square feet.
2: Well tbf they're traumatized more by their friends dying right in front of them rather than the inherent danger of the level so ye.
3: This is fiction, and in a world that bends the laws of physics and reality I feel like complaining about realism is a tad silly. There are so many levels that do way goofier things than the speed at which malnourishment kills a person.
Consensus:
You're overthinking this IMO; mostly by calling out realism about a fictional world which doesn't really make all that much sense to me. The idea is that this is a fun little read to read in your passtime. Although, I always appreciate feedback on my works so I can improve as a writer/storyteller so I thank you for that.
My main point is to elaborate on the things which negatively affected my own reading experience.
1. From my own experience whenever you quantify something in fiction, you have the potential to do far more harm than good to the quality of your work. It can add immersion and detail if it is done properly. If not, it kinda ruins the entire thing.
“Entity X possesses immense physical ability, being able to lift 50 pounds and run at a speed of 12 miles per hour” You see how the moment you analyze the numbers you go “lol what?”
I think from a pragmatic approach, it’s best to invoke the argument of fiction to expand the size of this greenhouse to around 30 square miles. That way you could have meaningful exploration. Sounds much easier than a massive rewrite. Or even better, remove all quantification and just say “an extremely vast greenhouse”.
2. I’d like to imagine they were assigned to this level for a reason.
3. The best way I can explain is that the anomalous aspects of other Backrooms levels was done in a more apt manner. When I read about how gravity changes direction once your leave the starting area of Level 7, I found it interesting. Reading about these spores killing people by malnutrition makes me shake my head. If you just change the spores to a neurotoxin it would sound equally terrifying and more logical.
This article is too well written and detailed for a downvote so no vote from me yet.
Hello again, hopefully, I didn't come off as rude and I apologize if so.
1: I'll change my measurements to more accurately fit the large greenhouse aesthetic. I understand the simplification but I was told to make it more specific by GL'ers, so in finding a middle ground I'll change it to the largest greenhouse in the world's size (215,278 square feet.)
2: So yeah, basically the traumatized guy and his friends were assigned to the fungi section to explore this area (This was technically the first exploration of this area at the time which is why they weren't aware of the fungus yet.) His friends weren't proper M.E.G. explorers yet so this would be their technically first mission. The rest is told within the audio log-
3: I might do a neurotoxin; however, this would entail a rewrite of a portion and I don't know if I can do that (However, I'll do what I can)
Consensus:
Again, sorry I came off rude in any way last message. Generally speaking, I want to find a middle ground, something we can both enjoy.
3. Here's a draft template I made:
When a wanderer breathes the spores of a pineapple-yellow Mykitan Fungus, neurotoxic compounds are released into the bloodstream resulting in the rapid loss of consciousness and subsequent death of the wanderer. Following death, the spores begin to feed on the body, eventually spouting new instances of the yellow variant Mykitan Fungi. Research is currently being done to determine the potential of these neurotoxic compounds for defensive purposes against hostile entities.
Effects Of Yellow Variant
- Neurotoxic spores
- Loss of all neural activity in victims after only 13 seconds
- Sprouting of new yellow variant Mykitan Fungi on the deceased body within 20-45 minutes.
