Synopsis:

With knowledge currently held by the M.E.G., Entity 73 appears to have two parts to its being, working in tandem. It has been observed as a non-sentient liquid, Abyssal Ooze, and a sentient humanoid, referred to as "Kirai." While cures for Abyssal Ooze's memetic and transmutive properties have not been found to date, research is ongoing. "Kirai" instances are relatively easily repelled through the use of squirt guns, and reality fresheners, which cause it to return to a liquid state if kept in one's vicinity for an extended period of time.

Liquid Description:

Entity 73's liquid state, more commonly referred to as "Abyssal Ooze," is a rare substance that can be found in various places scattered across The Backrooms. The "ooze" in question is black in color, and can be described as thick and viscous, almost like molasses.

On its own, the substance possesses no special qualities. However, if the substance is consumed or applied in a large quantity to the flesh of a human, a three-step infection process will begin.

Infection Stages
Stage 1 Approximately 15 minutes after exposure, the victim's veins will begin to darken, gradually becoming a shade of black visible beneath the skin. During this stage, the subject is fully cognitive and aware of this process. While no pain is caused, subjects may feel distressed.
Stage 2 During Stage 2, the dark substance continues to spread throughout the body of the subject. In this period, subjects will experience greatly heightened reaction time, senses, and heart rate. This stage usually begins 2 hours after Stage 1 and lasts for around 30 minutes.
Stage 3 As the final stage of the transformation process, Stage 3 begins once the substance spreads across the subject's entire body. During this stage, the psyche of the subject is completely overwritten and replaced with that of Entity 73.

Entity Description:

Once the transformation process has been completed, Entity 73 will enter its humanoid state, and become the sole host of the body until expulsion or the death of the body itself — typically resulting destabilization. Entity 73 appears to engage in a sort of symbiosis with its host, enhancing numerous physical characteristics such as strength, agility, and healing. Through means which are yet to be determined, Entity 73 transmutes most of the host's organic matter into Abyssal Ooze.

Entity 73 tends to manipulate its host into a specific form with which it represents itself. It appears as a lean figure averaging a height of 5'8". Its eyes glow with a dim, white light, and are the only part of its body not made of the black material. It has short, black hair with long bangs that hang down in front of its face. While the clothing Entity 73 wears can vary between hosts, it is typically seen wearing a dark, grey trenchcoat with a black t-shirt and jeans. Its body is made of a pitch black substance, which behaves as an amorphous solid. It can alter its body mass and shape at will, ranging from manifesting additional appendages to forming non-mechanical weaponry or tools from its existing ones.

Behaviors:

Identifying itself as "Kirai," a given instance of Entity 73 comes across as well-spoken and charismatic, always eager to converse with passersby. A compulsive talker at its worst, interactions with "Kirai" typically result in the annoyance of whomever its conversation partner may be. As behavior and memory are identical between instances, it is largely assumed that Entity 73 possesses some sort of a hive mind. This being said, only one instance of Entity 73 is observed at a time, even across levels.

Once in possession of a host, "Kirai" tends to wander a variety of levels, visiting certain entities and wanderers. The entity may occasionally grant certain favors to those who solicit it. As its motives are currently unknown, all forms of interaction between "Kirai" and others — notably G.O.Is and entities — are to be monitored.

Biology:

Entity 73's host body is primarily composed of Abyssal Ooze, which can be molded to any shape. While very flexible, the substance lacks in durability, and can be destroyed quite easily should the situation call for it.

A notable feature of this substance is that its quantity and compatibility varies between hosts. Some "Kirai" instances may be highly compatible with its host, and thus able to retain control of the form over a prolonged timespan. The less compatible a host is, the more quickly its biomass will destabilize and melt down, marking the end of both the host and the "Kirai" instance's lifespan. As of now, the reason for this is unknown, but research into the substance is still ongoing.

In addition to this, instances of "Kirai" are highly skilled in reality-warping, and are notably able to alter their surroundings at will on a large scale within a given level. As of right now, its current limits are unknown, but based on all documented encounters thus far, it does not yet seem to be capable of effecting multiple levels.

Entity 73 is mostly passive, save for controlling a host body. In the unlikely event that a physical altercation takes place, it has been observed to prefer "fight" over "flight."

While highly skilled in physical combat, "Kirai's" preferred method of self-defense is the utilization of the aforementioned additional appendages, which can pierce and slash attackers. On some occasions, "Kirai" has been seen occasionally wandering around with these tendrils exposed. It is likely that these appendages are a part of its baseline form and are usually folded away underneath its clothing.

Discovery:

While "Abyssal Ooze" and the transformation process into a "Kirai" instance has been sparsely documented, records and artwork from the Lost detail a figure similar to that of Kirai. In the art, a figure with white eyes and four black tentacles is portrayed standing next to two other figures. One is a spear-wielding being covered in eyes, wearing a long black robe or trenchcoat. The other is dressed in full medieval plate armor and is holding a large broadsword.

Research into these images and texts is ongoing but difficult. When questioned, members of the Lost seemed to regard the figure with a sort of "distasteful respect." Outside of the confirmation that the texts and art belonged to the group, no more information has been provided. It is assumed that discussion of this entity is either taboo or perhaps information on it is no longer present within their community.

Do's and Don'ts:

Do:

  • Dispose of "Abyssal Ooze" whenever possible, and report large collections of it to the nearest M.E.G. base.
  • Ward off hostile instances with a reality freshener or squirt gun.

Don't:

  • Consume or immerse yourself in Abyssal Ooze.

Falling back into your chair, you look at the document you’ve just written in haste. For the past 2 hours, you’ve been frantically typing information into the M.E.G.’s database, trying everything in your power to prevent any other innocent lives from being claimed by Entity 73.

You look down at your arms, spirals of the black liquid beginning to course through your veins, discoloring them. Shit.

If only I wasn’t such a klutz, you think. The joking helps distract your brain from what it knows will be coming soon. When it comes to M.E.G. entity research, a tiny slip of a glass vial can mean your end. But you don’t let your situation get to you. You have a duty to uphold to your successors. You feel a sense of depressive calm, as you once again try an almond water and agrugua fruit mixture to hopefully ward off or slow down the infection. You already know it will be ineffective, in the past hour you’ve tried every type of cure known to the M.E.G. for entity-based sickness, all to little or no effect. Sliding up to your desk, you type up an email…

Hey Dr. Chandra,

I hate to drop all of this on your already full plate at once, I know you’re already dealing with the loss of some of your other research assistants. I’ve been trying every cure I can think of, and nothing seems to be working. I’ve updated the document on-site with everything I’ve been feeling, and what I’ve tried. Hopefully you can use this to your advantage to prevent more incidents like mine from happening.

~ Dear Dr. McGinnity

My condolences. It pains me to see another one of our researchers go in such a gruesome fashion, no less yourself. Rest assured, your projects will be moved to other researchers after your departure.
If you haven’t already tried it, did you attempt to take the almond water intravenously? We do not have much to help you, but you may want to try that.

Also… I've been told to advise you not to let yourself… live… to become an instance of Entity 73. That could cause problems for everybody, as much as it pains me to suggest.

Hey again.

Apologies for forgoing the formalities, but I’m quite busy trying to get my things in order. Thanks for taking care of the logistics for me so I can focus on my last few hours of sentience. Do you know if I’ll still be… conscious in any way before that Kirai guy takes me over?

Thank you for the suggestion… I hadn’t tried injecting any almond water. I didn’t want to accidentally speed up the process of dying.

Y'know that old joke, “If vegetables are so good for you, why would I die if I inject them into my bloodstream?”

Same principle, but I’ll give it a shot. I’m out of ideas.

LOL- Suppose you’re right. Y’know, it's weird knowing you’re going to die here… My family back on earth already thinks I am. I suppose there's a bit of dark comfort in that.

I did try your injection suggestion. There was a bit of temporary relief, and the blackness actually began to recede a bit.

Unfortunately, afterwards, the infection came back way faster, and I ended up becoming worse than how I started. I feel like there's something we could do with this given time, but I don’t want to risk another injection, or altered one, lest I be taken before the bell tolls.

I fear I may have only one option left… self termination.
I’ll be waiting for your response.

Oh my dear Doctor Chandra, I don’t think you’d find it in your best interests to… get rid of me so soon! It has been only an hour!

I personally think that you’ll find my associate to be quite helpful in the endeavors of our organization, no? Think of all the wonderful things that could be brought about.

Such knowledge we could obtain, such power.

Ponder that for a moment before you contact our superiors.
